Echols, Harrison (University of Wisconsin, Madison). Properties of F' strains of Escherichia coli superinfected with F-lactose and F-galactose episomes. J. Bacteriol. 85:262-268. 1963.-A study of F' superinfection of F' strains of Escherichia coli by F Lac P and F Gal indicates that superinfecting F Lac P may achieve a stable existence along with native F Lac P in approximately 1% of the recipient F' population. The stable presence of F Gal, on the other hand, leads to a displacement or suppression of F Lac P when F Gal is used as a superinfecting agent or as the native episome. The majority of F' bacteria used as recipients neither acquire in stable form the superinfecting F-linked genes nor demonstrate gene activity immediately after attempted transfer, as judged by alkaline phosphatase synthesis directed by an F-transferred P(+) gene. This failure to show gene activity suggests that the F' bacteria which are sterile as recipients exclude transfer rather than inhibit subsequent multiplication.

Distribution of virulence associated genes in isolated Escherichia coli from avian colibacillosis
BACKGROUND: Colibacillosis is one of the most prevalentdiseases in the world that causes multimillion-dollar annuallosses. OBJECTIVES: In order to evaluate molecular epidemiologyof some virulence associated factors in Escherichia coli, isolated from poultry, the presence of iut A, iss, hly F, omp T, iroN, afa, sfa (S)and pap G (II) were investigated by multiplex PCRassay. METHODS: Two hundred th...
متن کاملIn vitro assessment of pathogenicity and virulence encoding gene profiles of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens
Background: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains have been associated with various disease conditions in avian species due to virulence attributes associated with the organism. Aims: This study was carried out to determine the in vitro pathogenic characteristics and virulence encoding genes found in E. coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens. Methods: Fifty-two stock...
متن کاملTransposition derivatives of an Hfr strain of Escherichia coli K-12.
HE genome in Escherichia coli K-12 exists normally as one ring of doublestranded DNA (CAIRINS 1963). The fertility factor, F, is responsible for the ability of certain strains to act as genetic donors. F may exist as an autonomously replicating element (in Ff strains) or be integrated into and replicate with bacterial genome (in Hfr strains) (WOLLMAN, JACOB, and HAYES 1956). Multiplication of t...
متن کاملProperties of F' factor deoxyribonucleic acid transferred from ultraviolet-irradiated donors: photoreactivation in the recipient and the influence of recA, recB, recC, and uvr genes.
Ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated Escherichia coli K-12 F lac(+) donors transfer damaged F' factors when mated with female cells. Exposure of the zygotes to white light after mating can cause the photoreactivation of the damaged transferred F' factors. In so far as the photoreactivation is specific for pyrimidine dimers, these experiments indicate the presence of UV-induced dimers in the transferred ...
متن کاملNonadaptive mutations occur on the F' episome during adaptive mutation conditions in Escherichia coli.
One of the most studied examples of adaptive mutation is a strain of Escherichia coli, FC40, that cannot utilize lactose (Lac-) but that readily reverts to lactose utilization (Lac+) when lactose is its sole carbon source. Adaptive reversion to Lac+ occurs at a high rate when the Lac- allele is on an F' episome and conjugal functions are expressed. It was previously shown that nonselected mutat...
